Ethylene(C2H4) and its properties

Ethylene (C₂H₄) is a colorless, flammable gas that is mainly used in the production of plastics (such as polyethylene) and as a ripening gas for fruit. It is an important industrial chemical that also acts as a plant hormone.

DANGERS

Fire and explosion hazard: Ethylene is highly flammable and can easily form explosive mixtures with air.
Risk of suffocation: In higher concentrations, ethylene can displace oxygen and cause suffocation.
Pressure hazard: Ethylene in liquid form is stored under high pressure; without proper handling this can lead to dangerous explosions.
Health risks: Despite its low toxicity, ethylene can cause respiratory irritation and dizziness in high concentrations.

Explosion: The release of ethylene together with an ignition source.
Suffocation: Enclosed spaces in which ethylene accumulates lead to a lack of oxygen.
Leakage: Leaks in pipes or containers that cause hazardous gas to escape.

First aid

1. Fresh air:

Move the affected person to fresh air immediately to stop exposure to ethylene.

2. Call an emergency doctor:

Severe shortness of breath or loss of consciousness are reasons to call the emergency doctor (112) immediately.

3. Monitoring:

The person’s breathing, pulse and consciousness should be checked regularly.

4. Remove from danger zone:

Move the person out of the contaminated area to safety.

5. Consult a doctor:

Even if symptoms are mild, it is important to consult a doctor to avoid possible consequences.

In case of unintentional release

1. Secure the danger zone:

Secure the affected area immediately and prevent access by unauthorised persons.

2. Ensure ventilation:

Ventilate rooms well or switch on ventilation systems to quickly dilute the gas.

3. Take protective measures:

Put on protective clothing, respirators and gloves to protect yourself from exposure.

4. Identify and eliminate sources:

Quickly identify the source of the release (e.g. a leak) and, if possible, stop it.

5. Alert the emergency services:

In the event of larger releases or if there is uncertainty, immediately contact the emergency services or a hazardous materials emergency service.
