A gas warning device is an indispensable safety instrument in industrial plants as well as in residential or commercial buildings. Whether in Gas heating, cooling systems, laboratories or Underground car parks – gases and vapors are necessary in many applications, but they pose a great danger if they escape uncontrolled. Because many of these gases are colorless and odorless, a leak can go unnoticed without suitable sensors. This is precisely where the gas detector comes in.
A gas warning device has the important task of detecting dangerous gas concentrations at an early stage and reporting them immediately in order to prevent damage to health, poisoning or even explosions.
A gas detector monitors the concentration of gas in the air around it in a continuous process. Current devices use different sensor technologies depending on the type of gas to be detected. Common options are: electrochemical sensors, catalytic sensors (for example for combustible gases), infrared sensors (for certain gases or hydrocarbons) or metal oxide semiconductor sensors.
The sensor reacts to the gas: In an electrochemical sensor, a chemical reaction generates an electric current – the higher the gas concentration, the stronger the signal.
In many cases, the measuring air is drawn in by natural diffusion, often via an integrated pump in mobile or portable devices.
A gas detector sounds an alarm – either visually, acoustically or both – as soon as the concentration of a gas exceeds a defined threshold, the permissible limit value. This gives people in the danger zone the chance to take action in good time – such as evacuating, ventilating or switching off systems.
Mobile gas detectors are perfect for mobile applications such as maintenance, inspections or temporary installations. They are usually worn on a belt or carried around and detect one or more gases, depending on the model. They are particularly useful in professions such as trades, maintenance or emergency services where work areas change frequently.
Fixed systems are used in industrial plants, laboratories or in buildings with a permanent gas installation. They consist of sensors (Gas detectors), a central evaluation device (warning center) and possibly automated safety measures (e.g. automatic Ventilation or shutdown).
Systems of this type monitor the air quality automatically and permanently, which means that it is not necessary for people to be on site at all times. Their use is particularly recommended in areas where gases are continuously present or where there is an increased risk (e.g. in industrial plants, refrigeration plants, laboratories, heating systems, garages, etc.).
