VOC and its properties

VOC gases are a collection of gaseous substances that easily escape from liquids or solid materials into the atmosphere. They are found in numerous everyday products, such as paints, solvents, cleaning agents and fuels. VOC gases are often colourless and odourless, but can cause health problems such as headaches, dizziness or breathing difficulties. They also contribute to the formation of ozone and smog, which have harmful effects on the environment.

Gas characteristics

  • Physical state: VOCs are usually gaseous at room temperature, but can also occur as volatile liquids that evaporate easily.
  • Odour: Many VOCs are odourless or have a characteristic, often pungent or chemical odour.
  • Flammability: VOCs can often burn or even explode, especially when present in high concentrations.
  • Toxicity: Certain VOCs are harmful to health and can cause breathing difficulties, headaches and long-term health problems.
  • Contribution to air pollution: VOCs are responsible for the formation of ozone and smog and therefore pose a risk of environmental pollution.

Questions about VOC detection?

DANGERS

  • Fire and explosion hazard: Many VOC gases are flammable and can cause explosive mixtures in the air at high concentrations. An explosion can be caused by open flames or sparks.
  • Health risk: When inhaled, VOC gases can cause health problems such as headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath or irritation of the respiratory tract. Long-term exposure can cause serious health problems.
  • Environmental pollution: By forming ground-level ozone and smog, VOCs impair air quality and can exacerbate environmental problems such as acid rain and climate change.
  • Toxic vapours: Some VOC gases are toxic and can cause serious health problems or even cancer if you’re exposed to them for a long time.

HIGH-RISK SCENARIOS

  • Explosion at high concentrations: In closed or poorly ventilated rooms, concentrations of VOC gases can increase to dangerous levels. Contact with an ignition source (sparks, open flames) can cause an explosion.
  • Fire hazard if released: VOC gases escaping from leaking containers or pipes can easily ignite, posing a fire risk.
  • Health hazards through inhalation: High concentrations of VOC vapours inhaled can cause acute health problems such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and breathing difficulties. Long-term exposure can result in serious chronic illnesses.
  • Environmental pollution caused by improper disposal: VOC gases released into the atmosphere in an uncontrolled manner can produce ozone and smog, which damage air quality and the climate.

1. Get people to safety:

  • To avoid further contact with VOC vapours, remove immediately from the contaminated area. Go to areas with good ventilation.

2. Keep the airways clear:

  • If the person is unconscious, they should be placed in the recovery position; it is also important to keep their airways clear.

3. Remain calm and reassure:

  • Reassure those affected and provide them with plenty of fresh air. Resting is helpful for mild symptoms such as headaches or dizziness.

4. Make an emergency call:

  • In case of severe symptoms such as shortness of breath, loss of consciousness or severely increased irritation of the respiratory tract, immediately dial the emergency number and call for help.

5. Resuscitation (if necessary):

  • Beginne mit der Herz-Lungen-Wiederbelebung, wenn die Person nicht atmet, und warte auf den Notarzt.

1. Cordon off the danger zone:

  • Evacuate the area immediately and restrict access to unauthorised persons to minimise exposure.

2. Ventilation:

  • Thorough ventilation of the room is key to quickly reducing the concentration of VOCs in the air. Open windows and doors if possible.

3. Remove ignition sources:

  • All sparks, open flames or hot surfaces must be removed to avoid the risk of fire or explosion.

4. Stop leakage:

  • If it is safe to stop the source of the release (e.g. leaking containers or pipes) by turning it off or sealing it, then do so.

5. Make an emergency call:

  • In the event of major leaks or if you are unsure, call the emergency services (e.g. the fire brigade) and seek professional help.
