Fire hazard: ethylene oxide is highly flammable due to its low flash point of -17 °C; it can catch fire immediately on contact with ignition sources.
Toxic vapors: Inhaling ethylene oxide vapors can have serious health consequences, such as breathing difficulties, headaches, nausea and long-term carcinogenic effects.

First aid

1. Get people out of the danger zone:

To avoid further exposure, move to fresh air immediately.

2. Keep the airways clear:

If the person affected is unconscious, they should be placed in the recovery position and their airways must be kept clear.

3. Fresh air and tranquillity:

Reassure those affected and leave them alone. Fresh air can help alleviate symptoms such as dizziness and nausea.

4. Call the emergency doctor:

5. Resuscitation if necessary:

If the person is not breathing, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately and wait for the emergency doctor.

Evacuate the area immediately and block access to unauthorized persons. Ethylene oxide is explosive and toxic.

2. Ventilation:

Ventilate the affected room thoroughly to reduce the concentration of ethylene oxide in the air.

3. Avoid ignition sources:

Remove any sparks, open flames or hot surfaces from the area to prevent an explosion.

4. Stop leakage:

If safe to do so, close the source of the release (e.g. valve) or reduce the pressure to stop the leak.

5. Make an emergency call:

Alert the fire brigade or emergency services, especially if the leak is large or difficult to control.
