Propane (C3H8) and its properties

Propane (C3H8) is a flammable, colorless and odorless gas that is mainly used as a heating fuel, for cooking and in gas cylinders. It is also used in Industry and as a refrigerant. Mixed with air in high concentrations, propane can be explosive and therefore poses a hazard.

Gas characteristics

Flammable: Propane, a highly flammable gas, is used as fuel.
Colorless and odorless: Propane has no odor of its own, but is often mixed with a fragrance (such as ethyl mercaptan) to detect leaks.
Storage: As a rule, propane is stored as a liquid in pressurized containers or gas cylinders.
Energy source: Used as fuel in heating systems, gas barbecues and vehicles.
Explosion hazard: Propane can become explosive in combination with air, especially in closed rooms.

DANGERS

Explosion hazard: Propane can produce explosive mixtures with air. A spark or flame can cause an explosion, particularly in enclosed spaces.
Asphyxia (risk of suffocation): Propane can replace oxygen in high concentrations, which can cause shortness of breath or asphyxiation.
Fire hazard: Propane is highly flammable, which is why there is a risk of fire at any time if it escapes and comes into contact with a source of ignition.
Pressure vessels: Prop ane is stored at high pressure. Leaks that pose a hazard can be caused by a damaged tank or a leaking pipe.
Propane poses a leakage hazard as it is heavier than air and can concentrate in low-lying zones. This increases the risk of abrupt ignition.

HIGH-RISK SCENARIOS

Indoor leakage: A propane leak inside a building can lead to a dangerous build-up of gas, increasing the risk of explosion or asphyxiation.
Inadequate ventilation: In areas with inadequate ventilation, propane can replace oxygen, posing a suffocation hazard to people in the vicinity.
Fire in the event of leaks: Leaking propane from leaking gas cylinders or pipes can catch fire immediately on contact with an ignition source and cause a fire.
Accident during transportation or storage: If propane containers are handled incorrectly, for example during transportation or storage, there is a risk of leaks or explosions due to depressurization.
Risk of explosion in the event of sparking: If the concentration of propane gas is in the right range when combined with a spark source, an explosion may occur.

First aid

1. Fresh air supply:

Move the affected person to fresh air immediately to stop exposure to propane.

2. Keep calm:

Immobilize the person and ensure that they can breathe normally. Breathing problems may occur due to the displacement of oxygen.

3. Unconsciousness:

If the person loses consciousness, place them in the recovery position to keep their airways clear.

4. Make an emergency call:

Call 911 immediately to report propane poisoning and get medical help quickly.

5. No mouth-to-mouth resuscitation:

Do not give mouth-to-mouth resuscitation if propane has displaced the air, but wait for professional rescuers.

6. Medical treatment:

After receiving first aid, the affected person should be taken to hospital for further treatment.

In case of unintentional release

1. Clearing:

Clear the affected area immediately to eliminate the risk of explosion or suffocation.

2. Ventilation:

Immediately ventilate the room well to dilute the propane gas and reduce the concentration.

3. Fix the leak:

Seal the leak if it is safe to do so and there is no danger.

4. Avoidance of ignition sources:

To reduce the risk of explosion, all open flames and sources of sparks should be extinguished immediately and electrical equipment switched off.

5. Make an emergency call:

Call 911 immediately and report the release of propane to get professional assistance quickly.

6. Use protective clothing:

Use appropriate protective equipment when handling propane leaks, such as respiratory protection and gloves.
